About The A Train
The story of The A Train began on a summer evening in 2022 along the shores of Priest Lake, Idaho. Three retired law-enforcement officers gathered around a campfire with friends—each with a guitar in hand and a few favorite tunes to share. As melodies drifted through the pines, campers strolling the lakeshore paused to listen, drawn in by the warmth of music, laughter, and the glow of the fire.
It was one of those rare and memorable nights where friendship, nature, and song come together effortlessly—
and it planted the seed that would grow into The A Train.
Meet The Band
Glenn Nagel – Trumpet & Rhythm Guitar
A retired California Highway Patrol Officer, Glenn has been a lifelong trumpet player with a passion for jazz. His musical journey spans full big bands, small jazz ensembles, and performances on international stages—including Euro Disney, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. Glenn brings the band’s signature “trumpet-forward” sound and adds rhythm guitar to enrich the group’s musical texture.
Brian Williams – Lead & Rhythm Guitar
Brian retired from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and has played guitar since childhood. He considers the Fender Telecaster “humanity’s most perfect instrument,” with country twang as his earliest musical influence. Over the years, his interests expanded into Bluegrass, Spanish guitar, and most recently, jazz. Brian’s versatility and vocals add warmth, style, and dimension to The A Train’s sound.
Ed Bejarana – Percussion & Vocals
Ed is an Army Veteran whose musical life began early and carried him into professional performance, including serving with the U.S. Army Band as part of the 3rd Armored Division Band in Frankfurt, Germany. Trained in both classical and jazz percussion, Ed now brings an expressive, modern rhythmic style to The A Train using the Roland HandSonic HPD-20. Offstage, Ed serves as President of The Veterans Club, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to reducing veteran and first responder suicide through community and connection. Ed is happiest the moment the music begins.
AJ Rush – Bass
A proud Coeur d’Alene local, AJ graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and went on to study electric bass at North Idaho College under the mentorship of Thom Rutley, whose career included performing with legends like Santana and Ray Charles. Over the years, AJ has played with numerous local bands and served as a stand-in bassist for the iconic Slab Inn. His deep sense of groove and effortless musicianship form the steady foundation of The A Train’s sound.
When he’s not performing, AJ keeps his hands in the music world as a technician at Northwest Music and works full-time at the Coeur d’Alene Press—proving that his rhythm carries both on and off the stage.
The A Train Experience
Inspired by both the railroad legacy of North Idaho and Duke Ellington’s timeless classic “Take the A Train,” the band’s name reflects its roots in jazz tradition and love of music that brings people together.
